Transport yourself to a Greek Island idyll from the comfort of your own home
April 2020/…Spectacular scenery, amazing beaches, wonderful weather, friendly people and a destination steeped in history – Greece and the Greek islands have so much that’s so good. Historians tell us it was the birthplace of democracy, maths, modern medicine, the Olympic Games and much more. In recent years, not only has Greece has become cosmopolitan and modern in every respect, without ruining the traditional charm and legendary hospitality that so many people love, many of the islands have become the backdrop to some iconic films.
So for now, until we can set foot on the islands again, put your feet up instead and be transported to a Greek island paradise from the comfort of your own home. Here are our recommendations…
Mykonos is one of the most cosmopolitan of the Greek islands and part of the Cyclades group, which also includes Santorini, Naxos & Ios, Mykonos is instantly recognisable for its superb sandy beaches, immaculately whitewashed cube houses, churches topped with striking blue domes and 16th-century windmills. Elegant boutiques, high-quality shopping and flamboyant nightlife have made it a thrilling destination, and a favourite for those who like their getaways to have a bit of VIP style. It is of course also the backdrop to the 1989 classic romantic comedy, Shirley Valentine. Mykonos really does have something for everyone. Quieter resorts like Agios Ioannis on the south-west coast are great for families whilst adventurers or couples may want to stay in Mykonos Town for a lively evening and sample fine cuisine. With its famous hilltop windmills overlooking the sparkling blue Mediterranean Sea and the many pristine sandy beaches that cling to its shoreline, Mykonos is a Cycladic gem. With so much on offer, your first visit to Mykonos is unlikely to be your last – visitors come back year-after-year.

This enchanting island with its picture postcard scenery is an artist’s paradise. Being twice the size of its neighbour, Skiathos, Skopelos with its flower filled courtyards, pretty cobbled streets, golden beaches and hillsides blanketed by greenery offers natural beauty at its best. Over one hundred tiny chapels are dotted around the town including Agios Ioannis Kastri, made famous by one of the 21st century’s most successful romantic movies, Mamma Mia. More than 50% of the island is covered by a virgin forest of pine trees. Skopelos has been referred to as the “Green and Blue Island” due to its vast amount of lush green forest, and beautiful blue sea. The island is a haven for walkers and hikers, offering breathtaking scenery, as well as beautiful flora and fauna and numerous hiking trails of varying terrain. All over the island, honey is collected and sold in small stores and supermarkets and the olive press in Glossa collects and sells olive oils. Island hopping around the Sporades is one of the best ways to see and experience Skopelos. On Skiathos, visitors can explore Venetian castles, stroll through forests or even take a rescued dog for a walk and its bustling Old Town is crammed with shops, cafes and bars. Skiathos is also home to the Princess Resort, where the cast of Mamma Mia stayed during filming! Then there’s amazing alonissos – a hidden gem and Europe’s largest marine park which protects monk seals and dolphins – a boat trip around the park is a must.
